ABSTRACT

This paper is an attempt to exhibit Philip Roth as a realistic American writer with a profound modern sensibility. Analysing Roth’s Novellas and Short Stories. This paper projects how he formed his characters with humour, pathos, satire, affection, duty, responsibility, guilt and hidden desires. Roth particularized Jewishness  in his stories to make universal conflicts more specific and realistic. Thus, this paper comments how he repeatedly pointed out the in congruity between ethical ideals and material realities in American Culture.
