Effect of Waste Foundry Sand on Cement Concrete: A Review

ABSTRACT

In the field of construction, modern world prefers concrete to other construction materials due to the fact that from common ingredients, it is possible to modify the properties of concrete to meet the requirements of any situation. With the passage of time the techniques of construction were modified by exploring new techniques and the concrete took a considerable place in the history of engineering. The concrete which comprises of other ingredients like sand and aggregate supposed the man to exploit the nearest sources like rivers, ravines and nearby wind sand dunes. Now with the advanced researches and exploring of new techniques waste foundry sand has been recommended after knowing the effect of foundry sand when used as partial replacement of sand or as whole replacement of sand.  Foundry sand is a by-product of ferrous and non-ferrous metal casting industry, possessing unique features. The waste foundry sand is being recycled and reused through a number of techniques. Foundry sand has modified number of properties of concrete comparatively to that of concrete containing a regular sand. The utilisation of foundry sand has a good effect on the economy of the society and proves to be eco-friendly. This paper reviews the effect of waste foundry sand on the various properties of concrete.
