Challenges of Afghan High School Students in Speaking English: A Study of Sar-e-pul Province

ABSTRACT

English language is taught as a foreign language in Afghanistan. No one speaks English in the communities; therefore, there are a lot of challenges in teaching and learning English language. This study attempts to find out the challenges of Afghan EFL learners in learning spoken English at governmental high schools in Sar-e-pul. Nowadays, learning English has become necessary for most of the people, especially for students. Two high schools were selected for this study. The data is collected through questionnaire and the collected data is analyzed in descriptive statistics.  The findings of this study indicate that there are major challenges that hinder students speaking skills. This study offers some suggestions and recommendations to build Afghan EFL learners proficiency.
