ABSTRACT
Bharathi Mukherjee is an Indian American writer who explores the problems of the Indian immigrants mainly, women. She writes about the struggles and obstacles faced by an Indian woman who settled in foreign nations. Her novels deals with cross cultural conflict, immigration, search for identity and expatriation. In her works, Bharathi Mukherjee writes how the female protagonist tries to tackle the problem of loss of culture and endeavors to presume a new identity in the America. In the novel Jasmine the protagonist undergoes several transformations during her journey of life in America, from Jyoti to Jasmine to Jazzy to Jase to Jane, and often experiences a deep sense of alienation resulting in a fluid state of identity.
