ABSTRACT
This basic resource should be available to all in the same way as air and water are available from nature. Monopoly of any country, nation, and community on the resources would be unjust that is why distribution of resources has been an important step in human development since time immemorialâ€. There have been many causes of development at different stages and their path of development has been elaborated by natural human activities. After India got independence in 1947, a long process of development began and the Government of India initiated development programs in rural areas. Rural development means an attempt to improve the standard of living of the people living in rural areas by economic, social and cultural upliftment. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act aims to guarantee at least 100 days of unpaid work in a financial year to an adult member of a rural household willing to do unskilled labour. This Act was implemented in a phased manner from 2 February 2006. The program was launched in the countrys 200 most backward districts in the first phase, then it was implemented in additional 130 districts under Phase-II in 2007-2008, at last the act was extended to the remaining 274 rural districts of India in Phase-III from 1st April 2008. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act now covers all the rural areas of the country.
