Is it Only Service or Sacrifice? - Reading Rabindranath Tagore’s “Postmaster” and “The Child’s Return”

ABSTRACT

This research paper critically analyses the roles of Ratan in ‘Postmaster’ and Raicharan in” The Child’s Return” to explore the complex interplay between service and sacrifice within the context of master-servant relationship. These two literary works present distinct yet interconnected portrayals of servants, offering insights into their characters, relationships with their masters and socio-cultural contexts they inhabit. Through a close examination of these iconic literary characters, this paper delves into the blurred lines between selfless service and personal devotion.
